Disney resort availability: how to get a room at a sold-out resort

Short answer: sold-out Disney World rooms come back when other people cancel, and at some resorts they’re gone again within minutes. Keep checking the exact resort and room you want, try a longer stay and the full price, or set an alert so you hear when one opens.

Sold out doesn’t mean gone for good

You found the resort, picked the dates and searched, and Disney says there’s nothing. That isn’t the end of it. Plans change, people cancel, and their rooms go straight back on sale.

Since September 11, we have seen 491 sold-out rooms come back at 15 Walt Disney World resorts, from the value resorts to the Deluxe villas and the Fort Wilderness campsites. 385 of the 491 came back between one and four months before check-in, so it’s worth looking well before the last minute.

How long a room stays bookable

It depends on the resort. Of 415 rooms we saw come back and then sell again:

How long it stayed bookableOpenings
20 minutes or less92 of 415
21 minutes to an hour36 of 415
More than an hour287 of 415

415 openings at 10 resorts between September 11 and October 27, 2026. Rooms were checked at intervals, so a room may have been back before we saw it, and the briefest openings could pass unseen. The real figures are shorter still.

128 of the 415 were gone within an hour, and 92 within 20 minutes. How long you get depends a lot on where you want to stay:

Pop Century1844%2 hours
Polynesian Villas & Bungalows3132%4 hours

Animal Kingdom Lodge3221%4 hours

At Fort Wilderness, 93% of campsites that reopened were gone within an hour. At the big Deluxe resorts a room can sit for hours. Either way, there’s no way to know which day it happens.

Why rooms come back

Mostly cancellations, and two of Disney’s own deadlines push people to make them:

Disney Vacation Club villas that members haven’t booked are also sold to everyone else for cash, which is how a Deluxe villa can appear when the rest of the resort is full.

How to find one yourself

You can do this without us. A few things we’ve learned:

  1. Check every room type. Disney drops a resort with nothing left from its results page. Open the resort anyway and look at each room. They sell out one at a time, and a Preferred room is often still there when the Standard rooms are gone.
  2. Search at the full price. Discounted rooms are their own allocation, and it runs out first.
  3. Try a longer stay. Some rooms are only sold for stays of a minimum length. If a room shows as unavailable for your dates, add a night and search again.
  4. Try fewer nights. Drop the first or last night. If that opens it up, book a split stay across two rooms or two resorts.
  5. Look around Disney’s deadlines. Check 30 days and 8 days before your arrival, when the people who are unsure tend to cancel.
  6. Know when your dates open. Disney opens resort dates in batches, and dining and Lightning Lanes count back from check-in. When each part of your trip opens.

That’s a lot of searching for a room that may only be there for minutes. If you’d rather have something watch for you, that’s what we do.

What an alert does, and what it can’t

Disney doesn’t tell you when a room comes back. Asked directly whether you can sign up to hear when a room type becomes available, planDisney’s answer is that there is no such notification.

You tell us the stay you want, and we email you when it becomes available, with a text too if you add your mobile. The email names the room, the dates and what Disney is charging, and links you to the resort on Disney’s own site so you can book it. We don’t hold it, reserve it, or book anything for you.

An alert is a head start, not a reservation. Disney sells the room to whoever gets there first, and a room can appear and be gone again before an email reaches you.

Some rooms can’t be watched at all. If your stay is too short for the rate Disney is quoting, or the room doesn’t sleep your party, no amount of waiting fixes it, and we say so instead of taking your money for an alert that can never fire.

Nothing here is affiliated with Disney. Booking goes to Disney and earns us nothing. No resort can pay to be listed or scored higher.

Common questions

How long does a sold-out Disney room stay available?

Usually less than an hour. Of 415 rooms we saw come back and sell again, 128 were gone within an hour and 92 within 20 minutes. A few lasted more than a day.

Does Disney have a waiting list for sold-out rooms?

Nope. Disney won’t email you when a room comes back. You check again yourself, or an alert does it for you.

Do sold-out Disney resorts open back up?

Yes. We have seen 491 sold-out rooms come back since September 11, 385 of them one to four months before check-in. Disney’s refund deadlines, 30 days before arrival for packages and 8 days for room-only bookings, also push people to cancel.
